Match Report Saturday 7th OctoberLeague 2 South City of London 1’s vs Coutts 1's Result 4 - 0 Scorers: Saint, Lockey, Fitzy, Josh MOM Reevo Another solid performance from the first team sees their unbeaten run extend to 3 matches and 180 minutes of football without conceding a goal. The first half was a case of City trying too hard instead of playing patient football and building from the back. Despite this City made a few openings which just lacked the final ball in the last third. 0-0 at half time but with City on top. The second half saw yet more possession for City with the midfield working well to break down any attack that Coutts could throw at them. Some solid defending from the back snubbed out any real chances that Coutts created and Tom in goal was a mere spectator. Still that elusive goal wouldn’t come until 20 minutes into the second half. A beautifully flighted free kick into the mixer from Capo! Was just too much for the Coutts defence to handle and up pops the forgotten man of the first team Chris Sinclair to head well past the keeper with shreaks of “I’ve still got it” as he ran back to the half way line! Well after that goal it was 2 in 2 minutes with some excellent work down the right from Jay who went past 3 players to then unselfishly roll the ball along the 6 yard box for Ben Lock to hammer the ball into the roof of the net. It was 3 within 5 minutes with a good cross from new boy Robbie Elliot which the defence again failed to clear and for Fitzy to coolly slot home. The game was well and truly finished off when Josh twisted and turned to give himself space to smash the ball home from the corner of the left hand box for the 4th although the keeper should have done better than to dive over the ball! A great second half performance saw City take a deserved win and all 3 points. Whilst not getting a mention in the match report, well done to Reevo at the back who was Man of the Match with another faultless performance. League 8 South Old Suttonians VIIs vs COL II
Result 0 - 3 Another workmanlike performance and clean sheet maintained the seconds momentum-gathering start to the season. We were out of the blocks like whippets, which can only be put down to the tactical masterstroke, questioned in some quarters, of playing in soaking wet kit. Expect it to be introduced into FIFA coaching courses shortly. As a result, Sutts barely got a kick in the first 15 minutes with debutant Moore and Andrews pulling the strings in the middle and Swerve providing his usual culture at left-back. Unfortunately with the final ball stubbornly refusing to find a green shirt, dominance did not translate into anything tangible. The goals for column remained untroubled, the three best opportunities spurned by the 50p-headed skipper. Inevitably, Sutts clawed their way back into the game and could have gone into the break in front, some uncharacteristic Keystone Kops at the back presenting a one on one on a silver platter. Fortunately Danny, superb throughout, was equal to the task, off his line like a cheetah and snuffing out the danger with minimum fuss and maximum physical damage inflicted on the oppo. HT 0-0 The all important first goal came after a fairly even start to the second stanza. With Mikey Z playing the holding role with no little aplomb, Andrews used his new found attacking freedom to good effect, cutting in and thwacking a shot on the fall into the roof of the net from 20 yards. Unfortunately the killer second goal took all too long to arrive, the crossbar denying Yappy's volleyed piledriver, Kababbe seeing the keeper pull off a couple of top drawer saves from two shots hit with his customary venom and Whitworth miscontrolling when well-placed. Finally the Sutts defences were breached again, Sage the creator exploding into life and threading the ball through to Andrews, who was denied a brace by the keeper after a jinking run, the ball falling invitingly for Mikey Z to lash home with gusto. The cherry on top was added by Andy Keene, put through on goal and opting for raw power, a Roy Race rocket that the keeper did well to get out of the way of. Job done, now for next week's top of the table clash with Old Meads.. MoM - Ben Moore - an accomplished and versatile debut. League 12 South Old Suttonians IX’s vs COL 3’s
Result 3 -5 Another Saturday, another goal fest, another 3 points for COL 3rd string. In perfect footballing weather on a reasonable pitch, COL were out of the blocks very quickly. Slightly against the run of play, we were 1-0 up after 5 minutes. A great ball over the top from Andy Marris saw PG the whippet lash in a superb left foot half volley that whistled into the back of the net. Not even 5 more minutes had passed when we went 2-0 up, a good cross from the left was turned into his own net by a Sutts defender, although we would have scored should he have missed the ball. Another 5 minutes and we went 3-0, this time Richard Flint making his first start in the centre of the park battled through and placed the ball into the net with aplomb. As you would expect, we took our foot off the gas a little and Sutts started to play some decent stuff and were creating a few chances. After 30 mins they pulled a goal back, a well taken strike that dipped under the cross bar. This did kick us back into action, and we started to create some chances with Pont having the best of them, pulling a shot just wide when through on the keeper. It seemed only a matter of time before we scored again, and it was Richard Flint who took his second well, playing a 1-2 with Pont before hitting a hard low shot into the bottom right hand corner. We just had time to be awarded a penalty (our 5th of the season), and up stepped Terry to tamely trickle the ball wide. HT 1-4 The second half started much as the first did, with COL creating quite a few chances, Clyson having a couple of good chances on his left foot, PG blasting wide from a difficult chance and Graeme seeing a good effort go close. It was no surprise when we scored our 5th, although there was some debate as to whether it was intended. PG, out wide right on the touchline sent in a high floated cross/shot, which deceived the keeper and dropped into the net. We were all in a bit of shock, and it was only when PG apologised to the oppo did we know that it was in fact a cross. To be fair to the oppo, they played very well from that point onwards and the rest of the half was a very close contest, and they had the better of the play, scoring 2 goals towards the end of the match (one from a player who was called ‘Beast’) to make the scoreline 5-3, which was probably about right. Maximum points from 3 games is a great start, and another tough battle again on Saturday. Goals: PG (2), Richard F (2), o.g. MOM: Richard Flint
