League 12 South City Of London IIIs V Whitgiftians 2’s Result 0 - 3 LOB Olympian Cup 3rd Round With a chance to meet the 2nd team in the next round, City of London went into this match with great enthusiasm. Unfortunately it proved a step to far in what has been a good Cup run in our first season in the league. The game started fairly evenly in the first ten minutes, but gradually the oppo began to get on top by swarming the midfield. They weren't creating much in the way of clear chances, but they forced a corner which they converted with a header at the back post. We weren't playing anything like to the best of our ability and, in truth, missed the pace of Andre up front. The oppo probably deserved a second goal, even though it was to come from an unlikely source and the tightest of angles - their striker sliding onto a cross that for all the world looked like a throw in. Not long after it was three, which a mix up at the back falling kindly to the oppo who proceeded to inadvertently score with his cross. 3-0, with half an hour gone. Our heads didn’t drop and we had the better of the remainder of the half, with a good chance falling to Clyson - which he just put over the bar. We were getting on top in the midfield and pushing on, with Wes and Pont on the wings getting a bit more into the game. Our make shift defence, with included new recruit John Child, was beginning to function well and even though it was 3-0, we didn’t feel out of it. Miggy delivered a typically inspired team talk at half time, including the phrase "Can we score we goals in a half? Yes we can!" - and we opened the second half brightly. Yours truly was unfortunately to blame for missing a couple of good chances that really should have made it 3-1 - and could have really turned the game. The referee (Woody!) was allowing all sorts to go, including a clear penalty for City! That said as the half wore on and City had to gamble more and more, the oppo had some very good chances - and at times we rode our luck at the back. A good half from City though, who must be wondering why we didn't play like that for the first 45 mins. City however should be heartened by the fact that Clapham beat Old Gynns in the league this week, promotion is still all to play for - sat in second place just two points off the pace.
