City Of London III vs Old Whitgiftians

Result 2 - 3

After being dragged on to the pitch 10 mins after published KO by a fuming ref, City started with 9 men against a full strength Whitgift. It was all out defence. Ten mins later and it was still 0-0. In the distance Adie

Turner could be seen running towards the pitch, then jogging, then limping to v. slow walking. Adie went in goal. 5 mins later, still 0-0 and Andy Ryder ( after his 1 hour walking tour of the area courtesy of a few local's wayward directions) joined the battle. Almost immediately some comic defending resulted in Whitgifts first goal. Ball rolled to Dave O'Connor who was caught in mid-contemplation over cloud formations he passed it back 5 feet behind Adie (remember him - not v. mobile) and voila a real Whit-gift! Adie off, Mig back in goal.

Whitgift poured forward, good passing and movement made hard for Terry, Dave and Brian. Eventually they got a second goal and looked up for more. City fought back and with our midfield getting more physical Whitgift got a little quieter in the last 5 of the first half. Last kick of the first half and a well delivered City corner found Terry at the back post who headed it toward Nige in front of the keeper and no contest. 2-1.

A very positive half-time chat and tactics sorted City came out of the blocks fired up. Andy Ryder was let loose on the right and several chances were made before he eventually got through on his own - shot, blocked back to an off balance Andy who prodded it home. 2-2.

10 man City worked tirelessly all over the pitch an in the final quarter the Oppo piled on the pressure with wave upon wave of attacks. Last ditch tackles, clearances off the line, fingertip saves. In the midst of this City had a gilt edge chance fall to Clyson two yards out from the corner of the six yard box but it stuck under his feet and the resulting shot lacked the pace to beat the keeper at the near post. 5 from time and Whitgift got the breakthrough when a move down the right resulted in a cross to the near post and a hapless shin knock from the striker nutmeged Brian's shot blocking dive and left Mig watching as rolled slowly into the left-inside netting. Final score 3-2.

City lost but every man out there can hold their head high. An excellent performance!

Ohhh I'm City till I die, I'm City till I die....

Special mention to MOM Andy Ryder, Terry Edwards, Brian Common, Nigel Coppen, Thomas McCourt, Dave O'Connor, Jim Trowman, Matty Holland, Clyson Burrows and Adie Turner.
